at the beginning of my journey in India I was staying 20 days in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Delhi. One night during the meditation it was popping up an idea in my head. For few years I was seeing a documentary about a technology developed by the old maya civilisation ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta ).
The ashram has a big garden, which is green and beautiful but once I was talking with Tara Jauha ( she is the owner of the ashram), she was telling me that in summer they have water problems.
That was is it. Using Terra Preta in this beautiful place would save water, would help the ashram which is place of peace, knowledge and love. So I started to do some research about this special earth and started my own experiment with different mixtures of this earth an planted 10 plants to see how they will grow.
The decisive part of the Terra Preta is the chair coal. The coal working in one had like a sponge, it collects water and save it in the earth. In the other hand it is a wonderful place to live for the bacteria which transform the earth in “motherearth”.
After building up the first preparation for my experiment I started my journey through India which took about two month. And the moment of seeing the plants (which are beautiful corn poppys) was a amazing moment which I will never forget. The plants with the mixture A and B was so much bigger and healthier than the plants growing in the normal earth. I was so happy that I started to sing a old persian song about corn poppys.

How to build Terra Preta:
And this is the real magic part of the whole thing, it is really easy to build the earth up!
You need:
1 KG chair coal
1 KG organic fertilizer
5 KG Earth
Activate the Coal: Break the coal in small pieces of about 3 cm to 2 cm. But do not stress you self to doing it perfect. The point of the size is that the water and the bacteria can access the coal faster in this size. But do not break the coal in dust, cause the coal dust is useless.
Mix the fretilizer to the coal and make the mixture wet. Do not drown the mixture but every peace should be wet. From now on you have to visit the mixture for 1 Week every day to make sure that is wet enough. Let the mixture stay in a warm but rain-safe place.
Now you can mix the Terra Preta with the earth plant the plant in see the result. From now on you need the half of the water! The plants will be much bigger. And the best thing. Once you produce Terra Preta it will be stay in there for centuries.
It could help the places with water problem you feed more people.
